Forms of confabulation: Dissociations and associations

► There are diverse forms of confabulation which partly or truly dissociate. ► Intrusions in memory tests dissociate from all other forms of confabulation. ► Momentary confabulations produced in response to questions have diverse mechanisms. ► Behaviourally spontaneous confabulation and disorientation reflect a failure of reality filtering. ► Fantastic confabulations are rare and indicate severe, diffuse cognitive dysfunction.
