Need for Cognition (NFC) is a trait-level measure of how much individuals enjoy engaging in effortful cognition. It has previously been reported to have a small to moderate association with aspects of intelligence but this has not been fully explored. The current study presents a comprehensive evaluation of the relation between NFC and intelligence and is the first to also examine working memory. Our results corroborate aspects of what has previously been reported but also contrast with some previous findings. We found NFC to be significantly correlated with fluid intelligence (β = .40) and crystallized intelligence (β = .32), but not working memory (β = .12). Possible ways NFC influences aspects of intelligence are discussed, including increasing test-taking persistence and increasing exposure to educational media.
► NFC moderately correlates with both gF and gC.
► Failed to fully replicate Fleischhauer et al., 2010.
► NFC is not related to working memory.
