► We study the role of capital controls in a model of the international macroeconomy. ► We study heterogeneity in capital liberalization experiences as cause of imbalances. ► Such heterogeneities affect the relative importance of precautionary savings motives. ► We provide evidence for countries' asymmetric liberalization experiences.
