Firms and the global crisis: French exports in the turmoil

► We examine the anatomy of the 2008-09 trade collapse using French firm level data. ► Financial constraints are a significant microeconomic determinant of exports. ► Yet, the bulk of the collapse is due to the drop in export volume of large exporters. ► The extensive margin and financial constraints played a minor role in the aggregate.
