Variable demand elasticities and tariff liberalization

► Low revenue varieties benefit the most from tariff liberalization. ► High revenue varieties may reduce trade following tariff liberalization. ► Empirical support using a case study of US Uruguay Round ad-valorem tariff cuts. ► Naively estimated trade elasticities exhibit a downward bias by roughly one point. ► These effects were also relevant for other trade shocks, such as exchange rates.
