► Threshold weakening is added to the cellular automaton slider-block model. ► A new behavior with quasi-periodic system-wide events appears. ► The model exhibits critical point phenomena with scaling exponents. ► The order parameter exponent is measured and compared to percolation theory. ► The punctuated ergodicity shown to be lost above the critical point.
