Strong crystalline fields - a possibility for extraction from the LHC

After a short review on strong field effects, the paper focuses on the first real - i.e. in principle operational - scheme for crystal-based extraction of the 7 TeV proton beams at the coming LHC. The operation of a bent crystal as an extraction device is likely to provide an intense, well-defined, continuous beam at an expense that is practically zero. Such an extracted beam could be used for a variety of applications in fixed target physics - in particular we mention QED effects.
