Separation, purification and preliminary characterization of sulfated polysaccharides from Sargassum plagiophyllum and its in vitro anticancer and antioxidant activity

► Entire thallus having sulfated polysaccharides and blade contain more polysaccharides than other parts. ► Fast flow anion-exchange chromatography used for purification of sulfated polysaccharides. ► F2 fraction recorded high amount of sulfated polysaccharides and fucose is major type sugar present in sulfated polysaccharides. ► Exhibited antioxidant and in vitro anticancer activity in selected cancer cells. ► Involved in cell cycle arrest of different fractions in various phases of cell cycles.
