Production of biodiesel by esterification of natural fatty acids over modified organoclay catalysts

► Three modified bentonites with acidic ionic liquids were synthesized and characterized. ► MB3B catalyzed the esterification of oleic acid with methanol with 92.8% yield at 6 h and 70 °C. ► The catalytic activity in the esterification of fatty acids and alcohols was investigated.
