► Eight screening instruments and two diagnostic instruments were identified. ► The Clancy Autism Behaviour Scale was the most frequently used screening instrument. ► The Childhood Autism Rating Scale was the most frequently used diagnostic instrument. ► Instruments were adopted more than two decades ago for detecting Childhood Autism. ► More standardised instruments have not been adopted to autism research in mainland China.
