Maternal functional speech to children: A comparison of autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, and typical development

► We compared maternal language to children with ASD, Down syndrome and typical development. ► Mother and child speech were studied during naturalistic play. ► Maternal language to children with developmental disabilities differed from that directed to typically developing children. ► We found a positive association between maternal speech and child MLU in TD dyads only.
