Bisphenol A treatment by the hot persulfate process: Oxidation products and acute toxicity

► The effect of varying operating parameters on hot persulfate treatment of BPA was investigated. ► Several aromatic and aliphatic oxidation products could be identified via GC-MS analyses. ► Products formed during the initial stages of treatment were found more toxic than BPA. ► A correlation existed between acute toxicity and 2,3-dimethyl benzoic acid evolution.
