Integrated versus stand-alone second generation ethanol production from sugarcane bagasse and trash

► Second generation (2G) ethanol is often conceived in stand-alone production plants. ► First generation ethanol from sugarcane produces surplus lignocellulosic materials. ► Integration of first (1G) and second generation ethanol production was simulated. ► Economic and environmental analyses were carried out for 1G, 2G and integrated 1G 2G. ► Integrated 1G 2G has advantages over stand-alone 2G.
