Folate-targeted nanoparticles for rheumatoid arthritis therapy

Activated macrophages are critical in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis and have been showed to express a folate receptor β which is specific for folic acid. This particular receptor allows internalization of folic acid-coupled cargo. In this review we will address the potential of folic acid-targeted nanoparticles as an effective drug delivery system for therapies that will directly target activated macrophages.128
