► Used a novel speeded-reasoning task to assess the resilience of naïve theories. ► Subjects verified target items more slowly and less accurately than control items. ► Effect obtained in 10 domains, ranging from astronomy to physiology to fractions. ► Effect was strongest in early developing domains and more knowledgeable subjects. ► Implications discussed for models of conceptual change.
