Distinct subdivisions of the cingulum bundle revealed by diffusion MRI fibre tracking: Implications for neuropsychological investigations

► The cingulum bundle was subdivided using DTI tractography. ► Distinct subgenual, retrosplenial, and parahippocampal subregions were differentiated. ► These subregions differed in their fractional anisotropy and radial diffusivity. ► Only a small proportion of fibres traverse the length of the human cingulum bundle. ► For neuropsychological studies the cingulum should not be seen as a unified tract.
