Intact implicit verbal relational memory in medial temporal lobe amnesia

► We test the role of the hippocampus in unaware relational memory. ► MTL amnesics show intact implicit memory for novel verbal associations. ► These findings demonstrate flexible use of retrieval cues following MTL lesion. ► Some forms of relational memory do not depend on the hippocampus.
