On the difference between working memory and attentional set

► We examine if a memory of a visual feature is equivalent to attending that feature. ► We find that visual working memory content inadvertently guides visual attention. ► The strength of the visual guidance depends on when observers expect the memory test. ► When the memorized information may soon be needed, guidance is stronger. ► Thus working memory content is dormant or active depending on attentional needs.
