Neighborhood-level stressors, social support, and diurnal patterns of cortisol: The Chicago Community Adult Health Study

► Chronic environmental stressors may link neighborhood disadvantage to poor health. ► Existing studies on stress and cortisol have focused exclusively on individual-level stressors and psychosocial characteristics. ► This study tests the association of neighborhood characteristics and diurnal cortisol patterns in 308 adults from Chicago, IL. ► Those from neighborhoods with more stressors and low social support had lower levels and flatter patterns of cortisol. ► This adds to growing evidence of hypocortisolism among chronically stressed adult populations.
