Macro-level gender equality and alcohol consumption: A multi-level analysis across U.S. States

► Unlike health status in general, higher levels of gender equality are assumed to lead to more drinking among women. ► In this U.S. study higher levels of gender equality were not associated with higher levels of alcohol consumption by women overall. ► In fact, most significant findings suggest that higher levels of equality are associated with less alcohol consumption by both women and men.
