Mean-field cage theory for the random close packed state of a metastable hard-sphere glass

► A mean-field cage theory for the random close packed state of a metastable hard-sphere glass is proposed. ► An analytical formula for the random close packing density is obtained. ► The predicted values are in good agreement with the experimental and simulation results for spatial dimensions d=2-7.
