► Telephone interviews were conducted in well and poorly served neighbourhoods. ► Logistic regression explored the role of availability of services on use. ► Living in a well-served neighbourhood predicted use of services. ► This effect was stronger in Saskatoon than in Mississauga. ► The relationship is modified by broader place-based factors.
