Disentangling intangible social-ecological systems

► We present a new theoretical framework for studying social-ecological systems (SES). ► Our transdisciplinary framework disentangles patterns of interdependencies in SES. ► We use the framework to study a rural agricultural SES in Madagascar. ► Mechanisms explaining the villagers' ability to preserve the forest are hypothesized.
