Direct analysis for the distribution of toxic glycoalkaloids in potato tuber tissue using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometric imaging

► For the first time, MALDI-MSI method was developed for detection and spatial distribution of glycoalkaloids. ► The uniform matrix coating method was effective for MALDI-MSI analysis. ► Matrix 2,5-DHB was more suitable than 2,4,6-THAP for analysis of glycoalkaloids. ► Relative amounts of glycoalkaloids were directly compared in various parts of potato tuber using MALDI-MSI.
