► A high-lycopene tomato sauce (160 g) consumption improved ox-LDL cholesterol levels. ► Lycopene and bioactive compounds occurring in tomato may prevent oxidative stress. ► Foods grown with higher antioxidant capacity might be useful in health maintenance.
