Synthesis of organic nitrates of luteolin as a novel class of potent aldose reductase inhibitors

Three series of luteolin derivatives were synthesised and evaluated for their aldose reductase inhibitory activity and nitric oxide releasing capacity in vitro. Eighteen compounds were found to be potent aldose reductase inhibitors with IC50 values ranging from (0.099 ± 0.008) μM to (2.833 ± 0.102) μM.
