Cotton fabrics treated with novel oxidic phases acting as effective smoke suppressants

► Sol-gel processes have been applied to cotton fabrics. ► Novel oxidic phases acting as smoke suppressants for cotton have been synthesized. ► Cone calorimetry turned out to be a useful instrumentation to assess the smoke release. ► Joint effects between silica phase and smoke suppressants have been observed.
