► Regenerated cellulose fibres bind calcium ions through cation exchange. ► The capacity of calcium binding is limited by the carboxylic group number. ► A calcium:carboxylic group stoichiometry of 1:1 is observed. ► For reasons of charge neutrality hydrogen carbonate is supposed to be bound.
