► The roots of Euphorbia fischeriana is a traditional Chinese medicine. ► An alkali-extractable and water-soluble polysaccharide (EFP-AW1) was isolated from the roots of E. fischeriana. ► The structural features of EFP-AW1 were established by the combination of chemical and NMR analysis.
