Magnetic chitosan composite particles: Evaluation of thorium and uranyl ion adsorption from aqueous solutions

► Composite chitosan magnetic particles prepared by an original method were evaluated as a new radiocation adsorbent. ► The material has superior adsorption capacity both for uranyl (667 mg/g) and thorium (313 mg/g) ions. ► Radiocation adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic ► Both ions may be recovered to the extent of over 80%. ► This adsorbent is a good low-cost candidate for applications in wastewater decontamination.
