Multifunctional bionanocomposite films of poly(lactic acid), cellulose nanocrystals and silver nanoparticles

► Multifunctional nanocomposite films for packaging were developed by melt compounding. ► Cellulose nanocrystals and silver nanoparticles were dispersed in polylactic acid. ► Nanocrystal (CNC) surfactant modification favours cellulose dispersion in the PLA. ► CNC combined with silver nanoparticles enhance PLA thermal and mechanical response. ► Silver based nanocomposites show an antibacterial effect on S. aureus and E. coli.
