A novel polysaccharide secreted by pal/rim mutants of the phytopathogen fungus Ustilago maydis

► We have analyzed the production of an exocellular polysaccharide by Ustilago maydis. ► The polysaccharide was secreted only by mutants deficient in the Pal/Rim pathway. ► The polysaccharide was identified as a novel unbranched (1 → 3)-β-d-glucan. ► The use of the polysaccharide in medical and industrial applications is entertained.
