Synthesis and characterization of disulfide-crosslinked alginate hydrogel scaffolds

► A novel alginate hydrogel scaffold with SS bond in the linkages was prepared. ► This scaffold displayed a specific disintegration property in physiological condition. ► Alginate solution concentration and crosslinker types affected the scaffold structure. ► After surface modification with chitosan, the strength of the scaffolds was improved.
