Surface kinetics of nitrogen dissolution and its correlation to the slag structure in the CaO―SiO2, CaO―Al2O3, and CaO―SiO2―Al2O3 slag system

► Rate constant of nitrogen dissolution for CaO-SiO2 showed parabolic curve with a maximum. ► Nitrogen rate decreases due to excess O2- blocking the sites for adsorption. ► Rate constant in CaO-Al2O3 higher than CaO-SiO2 due to the lower binding energy. ► Rate constant faster with both silicates and aluminates present. ► Excess CaO inhibits nitrogen adsorption and dissolution by surface blockage.
