► Connexins (Cxs) and gap junctions are involved in atherogenesis. ► Cx expression and function are regulated in all cell types involved in atherosclerosis. ► Cx37 and Cx40 are atheroprotective proteins; the role of Cx43 is less clear. ► A polymorphism in the human Cx37 gene is a prognostic marker for CAD.
