Bioinformatic characterization of the 4-Toluene Sulfonate Uptake Permease (TSUP) family of transmembrane proteins

► The 4-Toluene Sulfonate Uptake Permease (TSUP) family is ubiquitous in nature. ► Uptake of sulfur-containing compounds is mediated by members of the TSUP family. ► No bioinformatic characterization of this family of porters has yet been described. ► We here demonstrate that these proteins arose by intragenic duplication of 4 TMSs. ► Phylogeny, motifs, topologies and functional predictions are described herein.
