► Novel class of amphibian skin antimicrobial peptide from unstudied species of frog. ► Biosynthetic precursor-encoding cDNA cloned from cDNA library made from the skin secretion itself. ► “Shotgun” cloning procedure used with primer sets designed to common conserved regions of transcripts. ► Predicted mature peptide located in HPLC fractions of skin secretion and its primary structure confirmed. ► Polypeptide and encoding precursor cDNA derived from same skin secretion sample.
