Insights into the recognition of the human glycome by microbial carbohydrate-binding modules

► A subset of carbohydrate-binding modules (CBM) recognize mammalian glycans. ► These currently fall into CBM families 32, 40, 41, 47 and 51. ► The diversity of binding specificity among these families is quite high. ► Three structural models of CBM deployment are presented.
