The effect of intra-nucleus accumbens administration of allopregnanolone on δ and γ2 GABAA receptor subunit mRNA expression in the hippocampus and on depressive-like and grooming behaviors in rats

► Neurosteroids, such as allopregnanolone (ALLO), are modulators of the GABAA receptor. ► ALLO plays an important role in the pathophysiology of depression and anxiety. ► ALLO alters the hippocampal mRNA expression of γ2 and δ GABAA receptor subunits. ► There are asymmetrical changes in GABAA receptor mRNA expression after ALLO treatment.
