Cloning, expression and characterization of antimicrobial porcine β defensin 1 in Escherichia coli

► One form of porcine β defensin 1 (pBD142) gene was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. ► The recombinant pBD142 was purified by His tag affinity column with 90% purity. ► The purified recombinant pBD142 had antimicrobial activity against bacteria. ► The purified recombinant pBD142 showed low hemolytic activity. ► The expressed recombinant pBD142 showed high thermal stability.
