A new artificial receptor 1 was synthesized for the detection of Fe3+ and Mg2+ in solution as a colorimetric and fluorescent sensor, respectively. The sensor exhibited highly selective and sensitive recognition towards Fe3+ in CH3CN via color change from colorless to brown. Also it showed a significant fluorescence enhancement (70-fold) towards Mg2+ in the mixture of solution CH3CN/H2O (8:2, v/v). The selectivity of either Fe3+ or Mg2+ was not interfered by the presence of other metal ions such as Cr3+, Mn2+, Co3+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Ag+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Ca2+ and K+ ions.
Dual chemosensing properties of new selective colorimetric chemosensor for Fe3+ and fluorescent sensor for Mg2+ cations based on coumarin derivative.Figure optionsDownload as PowerPoint slideHighlights
► The coumarin based receptor could be used as a selective sensor for Fe3+ ions by using UV–vis.
► And as well as Mg2+ ions by using fluorescence methods.
► It has an advantage of naked eye determination without using any costly instruments.
