Hydrogen production via the aqueous phase reforming of polyols over CMK-9 mesoporous carbon supported platinum catalysts
چکیده انگلیسی

• A hollow-type 3-D mesoporous carbon (CMK-9) supported Pt catalysts were prepared with various Pt loadings for APR reactions.
• The prepared CMK-9 support was compared with other supports such as 2-D mesoporous CMK-3 and conventional activated carbon.
• Effects of Pt loadings, polyol used, reaction temperature and space velocity were investigated on the Pt/CMK-9 catalyst.
• The higher APR activity over the Pt/CMK-9 catalyst was due to preventing catalyst sintering.

A hollow-type ordered mesoporous carbon supported Pt catalyst with a three-dimensional (3-D) pore structure (Pt/CMK-9) was applied to aqueous phase reforming of polyols for hydrogen production. The catalysts and supports were characterized via X-ray powder diffraction patterns, transmission electron microscopy, N2 sorption, and CO chemisorption techniques. The effects of Pt loading, polyol type, and reaction conditions on APR over Pt/CMK-9 catalysts were investigated. Various polyols, ethylene glycol (EG), glycerol, and sorbitol were used as feedstocks for the APR system. The highest hydrogen production rate among the different Pt loadings on an APR of 10% EG was observed for the catalyst with a platinum loading of 7 wt% with 83.3 cc min−1 gcat−1. The hydrogen yield increased in proportion to the reaction temperature, but decreased with the increase in the carbon number of the polyol and weight hourly space velocity.
