• Extended reach ligands with CuI consistently give 1-D necklace polymers.
• Large macrocyclic rings with Cu2I2 nodes.
• No interpenetration observed.
• One ligand is hypodentate.
Reaction of three ‘extended-reach’ bridging ligands with copper(I) iodide consistently produced 1-D coordination polymers with a necklace-type connectivity. These all consist of large macrocyclic rings sharing Cu2I2 nodes. In one case a potentially tripodal ligand acts in a hypodentate mode, with a pendent non-coordinated arm inserted into the cavity of an adjacent macrocycle.
