• Luminescent gold(I) complexes with alkynyl ligands containing chromophoric groups were synthesized and characterised.
• The photophysical properties of these complexes were examined in solution and solid-state.
• Computational studies were carried out to rationalise the photophysical behaviour.
A series of gold(I) complexes containing alkynyl-fuctionalised benzothiadiazole or boranil-derivatives as chromophores were prepared and fully characterised by spectroscopic methods and X-ray diffraction. The photophysical properties of the compounds were studied both in solution and the solid-state. The data show that the luminescence behaviour in these compounds is dominated by the boranil and benzothiadiazole chromophores. Computational results were used to further rationalise these findings.
