Phenazines are synthesized by Cu-catalyzed homocoupling of 2-iodoanilines or 2-bromoanilines in water in moderate to excellent yields up to 85%.
A simple, efficient, economical and environmentally friendly protocol for the synthesis of phenazines via Cu-catalyzed homocoupling of 2-iodoanilines or 2-bromoanilines in water has been developed. Asymmetric phenazines could be also successfully synthesized by cross-coupling between two different 2-iodoanilines in moderate yields.Figure optionsDownload as PowerPoint slideHighlights
► Phenazines could be easily prepared by homocoupling of 2-iodoanilines or 2-bromoanilines.
► The catalyst Sulfonato-Cu(salen) was easily prepared and showed high catalytic abilities.
► Water was used as sole solvent instead of usually used organic media.
► The reactions could be carried out in the air under mild conditions.
