► Modulation of (π-arene)chromium(0) complexes by the ruthenium-catalyzed ring-closing metathesis. ► The reaction takes place within the chromium-coordination sphere. ► A novel high-yield route to phosphine-chelate (π-arene)chromium(0) species. ► The reaction is potentially extendable to stereoselective variants controlling the (π-arene)chromium(0)-based planar-chirality.
