Synthesis and characterization of mixed-ligand ferracarboranes. Direct metalation of the nido-carborane [nido-7,8-C2B9H12]− mono-anion with 14-e [Ph2P(CH2)nPPh2]FeCl2 (n = 2, 3)

Novel mononuclear mixed-ligand 17-e and 18-e closo-ferracarboranes were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction studies. In addition, the paramagnetic complexes were attempted to use as ATRP catalyst precursors for MMA and styrene, however, with moderate success. The redox chemistry of these complexes was also studied.
