• Triply bonded M2(OR)6 compounds (M = Mo or W) can react with small molecules.
• Small molecule reactivity of carbon monoxide, alkyne, ethene and allene is discussed.
• Varying ‘OR’ allows for the tuning of steric and electronic properties of M2(OR)6.

The versatile role of alkoxide ligands in the development of organotransition metal chemistry is illustrated in the chemistry of M2(OR)6 compounds (M = Mo or W) with particular emphasis on the activation of carbon monoxide, alkynes, ethene and allene. The specific selection of R allows for the tuning of reactivity as a result of the influence of steric and electronic factors.
