Synthesis and characterization of Li(I)-M(II) (MÂ =Â Co, Ni) heterometallic complexes as molecular precursors for LiMO2

► Heterometallic molecular complexes with {Li2M2} (M = Co,Ni) metal core were synthesized. ► Thermal decomposition of {Li2M2} compounds leads to formation of LiMO2 below 500 °C. ► {Li2M2} complexes are molecular precursor for cathode materials.
