New coumarin complexes of Zn, Cu, Ni and Fe with antiparasitic activity

Coumarin, a secondary metabolite in innumerous plants, exhibits diverse biological properties, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiparasitic properties. The reaction of 4-hydroxy-3-Nitrocoumarin with [Cu(CH3COO)2]·H2O, [Ni(CH3COO)2]·4H2O, [Fe(SO4)]·7H2O and [Zn(CH3COO)2]·2H2O produced 4 new complexes, as characterized by UV, FT-IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and melting points. The in vitro antiparasitic properties of these complexes were evaluated in two different strains of Trypanosoma cruzi (CL and G). The 4H3NCFe and 4H3NCNi compounds showed equal activity in strains G and CL, while the Benznidazole was more active in strain G than in the CL strain. The safety index calculated for compounds 4H3NCNi and 4H3NCFe were 19:11, respectively. These results indicate the possible continuity of preclinical studies in vitro and in vivo with these compounds. Complexation with metal ions increased the antioxidant and anti T. cruzi properties of 4-hydroxy-3-nitrocoumarin.

The present work concerns the search for new compounds with anti parasitic and antioxidant activity and less toxicity than Benznidazole, treatment drug for anti T. cruzi.Figure optionsDownload as PowerPoint slide
